The Academy for the Love of Learning will host its annual celebration of Ernest Thompson Seton’s birthday in an open house on August 14th, 2016.

Ernest Thompson Seton, the leading wildlife artist of his generation, a best selling author, and co-founder of the wildlife conservation and youth outdoor education movements, was also a scientist and explorer who was fascinated by the plants and wildlife of the Arctic.

In 1907, he fulfilled his ambition to see the far north by launching The Arctic Prairies expedition out onto the Tundra regions of Canada’s Northwest Territories.

In July of 2015, the Academy sent out “The Arctic Prairies Expedition II” expedition to retrace his route around remote Aylmer Lake. The result of their research about Seton’s journey is chronicled in a film premiering on August 14th alongside the opening of an exhibition of Seton’s photographs and illustrations from his original expedition. The Arctic Prairies exhibition will feature artwork from the Philmont Museum and Library & Archives Canada.

About the Academy and the Seton Legacy
In 1930 Ernest Thompson Seton, the famed artist, naturalist, author and co-founder of the conservation movement bought 2500 acres of land outside of Santa Fe to create a home in what is now called Seton Village. On this ground all that Seton had learned about nature, animals, and human endeavor came together at the end of his life to serve his overall philosophy.

His dream of wildness was not a pastoral fantasy. It was grounded in reality and served by a lifetime of learning in and from nature. Said his wife Julia upon finding the land in Seton Village: “Everything that we had sought together through the years was there in fullest abundance. Every theory of life that we had held was waiting there to prove its truth and rightness, unvoiced but chanting its alleluia to our grateful hearts. The veil is very thin across this point of view.”

In 2004, the Academy for the Love of Learning acquired what was left of Seton’s Legacy: his home, his possessions, and his last 86 acres, and began a restoration of the land that has become the ground on which a thriving campus for transformative learning is conducting programs for teachers, community artists and leaders, individuals and organizations.

Speaking about the Academy’s relationship with the land, Academy founder Aaron Stern wrote “We had to clear it, we had to see it, and we had to give it the space to become itself. Then and only then could we grow buildings, cultivate learning landscapes, and create activities and programs.”

The Seton Gallery is open on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, and by appointment.
