2018 marks both The Academy for the Love of Learning’s 20th anniversary as an established organization, as well as the centennial of the birth of the 20th-century musical giant Leonard Bernstein. The Academy shares a deep history with Leonard Bernstein, and ultimately was birthed from an intense collaboration between Bernstein and Academy President Aaron Stern during the final decade of Bernstein’s life. Their shared aspiration led them to explore how to awaken, nurture and fuel a lifelong love of learning as a means to becoming more fully human.

A grand birthday celebration will be held here at the Academy on the afternoon of August 25th, Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday. We will be celebrating with a concert featuring special works from his repertoire (vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental), along with stories of his time spent with Lenny and stories of his personhood and musicianship. Award-winning musicians from around the country will be performing a selection of Bernstein’s songs, including “I Hate Music”, “Three Meditations from Mass”, and “Thirteen Anniversaries: For Aaron Stern.” Charlie Harmon, Lenny’s last musical assistant, will also read from his new book on his time as Bernstein’s assistant.

Bernstein’s birthday celebration at the Academy campus is a free event, but registration is required and donations are appreciated.

For a donation of $300.00 or more, you are invited to continue celebrating with us at a private dinner at the Academy before attending ‘Candide’ at the Santa Fe Opera as a group. Ticket and transportation included. Please contact Laura Pancoast to ensure your donation and registration for the full evening.

**Note that parking will be shuttle service from the Santa Fe Waldorf School for the general public. Communications will be sent to registrants prior to the event with specific details. Please allow for extra time for transport between Santa Fe Waldorf School and the Academy.
