Manager, El Otro Lado in the Schools
Barbara Deswood manages the Academy’s El Otro Lado in the Schools program, now in its fifth year with Santa Fe Public School district.
Barbara holds degrees in health and human services and Spanish. She has been a classroom teacher in various settings, including public high, middle and elementary schools, Waldorf and an International Baccalaureate magnet school. As a licensed K-12 teacher she has focused on Spanish, visual arts and English language learners (ELL), and holds additional endorsements in TESOL, health, English and social studies.
Her teaching reached beyond the classroom with a middle school social justice group and after-school English as a second language (ESL) classes for parents and adult community members. She also began a vision group to create space for teachers to support one another in school. In addition to classroom teaching, she is a certified childbirth educator. Before becoming a teacher, Barbara worked with non-profit organizations in Wisconsin and Colorado in social services and education programming.
Barbara has lived and studied abroad in several countries in South America and Europe. She studied and performed with the National School of Folklorico Dance in Peru and continues to enjoy dance here in Santa Fe. Barbara brings a passion for the integration of arts, culture, and self-discovery as methods of pedagogy that support both teacher and student.
