Event Details

Date: November 1st - November 3rd, 2018
Time: Multi-day Event
Location: Albuquerque Convention Center
Notes: El Otro Lado Workshop is in Saturday, November 3rd at 2:15pm. Registration is on a sliding scale.

You’re invited! Join hundreds of fellow artists, activists, educators, policy-makers, students, dreamers, healers, truth-tellers, and allies for CULTURE/SHIFT 2018! This intercultural, intergenerational gathering will bring people from across the country for skill-building, relationship-building, and engaged learning, deepening a movement for cultural democracy. CULTURE/SHIFT 2018 is hosted in partnership with the City of Albuquerque Department of Cultural Services and New Mexico-based arts and social justice organizations. Together, we will create, explore, and amplify strategies for cultural healing, resilience, and resistance.

What are the leverage points for shifting from a consumer culture rooted in isolation and inequality to a creator culture rooted in community and equity? How can Citizen Artists sustain presence, well-being, and hope in challenging times? How can we organize in our own communities and across the country to bolster support for cultural activity that cultivates empathy, equity, and social imagination? Through 45+ participatory workshops, performances, plenaries, and art-making events, we’ll explore themes such as migration, indigenous cultural rights, climate justice, public memory and commemorative justice, ethics of community-based arts, community development/displacement, and much more.

Plus, stay an extra day for Indigenous Comic Con and the legendary Muertos y Marigolds Parade! SLIDING SCALE registration includes all programming, lunch on both days, morning refreshments, and opening and closing parties.

Join our El Otro Lado Workshop on Saturday, November 3rd from 2:15pm – 3:45pm at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Our workshop will convene around the El Otro Lado installation at the Convention Center, a part of the City Public Art collection, which comprises visual, audio and text-based stories of a diverse group of Albuquerque residents.

Using the installation, participants will be taken on a journey to experience and feel into the power in story and how, if activated in a sensitive and ethical way, this process can trigger radical beautiful trouble. We’ll experience a unique process of unearthing lost and unheard stories, using deep listening skills and feeling the impact of bearing witness. Together, we’ll delve into constructive conversation, move, learn to see and hear story and each other in new ways, laugh a lot, and create a new collective story.
