Seton 152nd Birthday Celebration

In 1930 Ernest Thompson Seton bought 2500 acres of land outside of Santa Fe. All that Seton had learned about nature, animals, and human endeavor came together at the end of his life to serve his overall philosophy and it came together here, on this ground that we stand on.

In 2004 The Academy for the Love of Learning acquired what was left of Seton’s Legacy: his home, his possessions, and his last 86 acres. Seton’s dream of wildness was not a pastoral fantasy. It was grounded in reality and served by his lifetime of learning in and from nature. We understand what Seton was telling us – that the ground we stand on matters. That restoring this land to harmony is the foundation of any learning philosophy. Now the land has an ongoing restorative function – and we continue to tend to its well being as we tend to our own – and it in turn tends to ours, and a cycle is revealed that transforms how we see our world, just as Seton was transformed by looking hard into the eyes of a wounded wolf.

Please join the Academy in honoring this ground and Seton on his 152nd Birthday.

“But when we stood together one memorable evening and faced a sunset of unspeakable light, we knew—as we always have known in moments of acceptive decision… Everything that we had sought together through the years was there in fullest abundance. Every theory of life that we had held was waiting there to prove its truth and rightness, unvoiced but chanting its alleluia to our grateful hearts. The veil is very thin across this point of view.”

Julia Seton, 1929
