Cultivating resource and resiliency in school communities

In gratitude and with compassion for those who work in our schools in these challenging and stressful times, The Academy for the Love of Learning and The Sky Center are collaborating to offer a day of nourishment and reflection to educators in our community. We invite all school staff to join us at no cost including administrators, counselors, school nurses, social workers and of course, our teachers.

The Academy’s Institute Teaching offers educators of all kinds and from all fields an opportunity to renew their aspirations and innate sense of curiosity, wonder and desire to learn. Through shared experience, reflective practice, time in nature and artistic expression, participants are able to open up to transformative and positive change within themselves, their organizations and their communities at large. Fundamental to the Academy’s learning practice is the intentional integration of the more challenging and uncomfortable aspects of our experience as educators with the more noble and heroic. In effect, this creates a living bridge and wholeness that, over time and with practice, can become a deep, intrinsic pattern and support when back in the classroom or professional setting.

The Sky Center will offer its lens on resiliency in the field of education. Drawing upon research supporting mindful awareness practices as a core pathway to professional well-being, facilitators will lead participants in experiential exercises intended to offer nourishment. Didactic information will also be offered providing insight about a practical and sustainable way forward in school communities rife with toxic stress.

Lisa Faithorn

Erin Doerwald

Erin Sibley Doerwald, LCSW is a family therapist and mindfulness teacher based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In her work as the Program Director for The Sky Center of the New Mexico Suicide Intervention Project(NMSIP), Erin offers an experiential and research informed perspective on the connection between self-care, resilience, and suicide. In an effort to provide comprehensive services to enhance the safety and well-being in our community, she co-founded The Sky Center's Mindful Education Santa Fe Program in 2014, providing support for mindful awareness practices in New Mexico school communities. She received her training in mindfulness facilitation from UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC), a department of the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. She is a certified mindfulness teacher with the International Mindfulness Teachers Association. She also serves as a mentor for students receiving training in the Long Distance Intensive Practice Program at UCLA's MARC.

Grietje Laga

Griet Laga works as the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the The Sky Center of the New Mexico Suicide Intervention Project. She is closely engaged with eight Natural Helper groups in different Santa Fe Public Schools and is a facilitator of The Sky Center's Inner and Outer Life Skills Group, focusing on themes such as leadership, grief and loss, and developing inner and outer resources. With a Licentiate's degree in Physical Education and a Master's degree in Experiential Education, Griet brings inspired, hands-on activities in all of her programming. Her main passion remains the outdoors, where she has spent nearly 30 years facilitating groups in adventure education and nature connection.

Randy Grillo

Randy Grillo has been a teacher of young adults for two decades. Through his experiences teaching in Washington State, Mexico, Costa Rica and New Mexico, he has developed a style of education dedicated to creating experiences for students where they slowly gain control of their own learning and the teacher becomes more the facilitator than the expert in the room.

Randy holds a B.A. in Romance Languages and Literature from the University of Washington, a Master’s in Education from Western Washington University, and National Board Teacher Certification in World Languages. He teaches Spanish Language Arts at Monte del Sol Charter School, TESOL methodology classes at Santa Fe Community College and consults with school districts for best practices in working with English Language Learners.

Upon finishing his first school year in Santa Fe in 2009, Randy enrolled in the Summer Teacher Renewal Institute, and since then has participated in Wisdom Circles and El Otro Lado in the Schools. He co-facilitates the Teacher Renewal Series.
