Reinventing Education: Re-Imagining Learning

Toward a Culture of Renewal and Reflection for Educators

Event Details

Date: Thursday, April 26th, 2007
Time: 9:00 AM- 12:30 AM
Location:

With Aaron Stern and Matthew Fox

Two visionary leaders share their perspectives on new possibilities in education and learning, in dialogue and in a daylong, hands-on workshop, exploring and inviting the unique and pivotal role of teachers in revivifying learning and education, and the ways in which they must be supported.

In this era of “no child left behind”, how can we move from frustration and exhaustion to a place of creativity, inspiration and ongoing renewal?

• How can we achieve this in a sustainable way – sustainable for our schools, our students, their families, and our teachers?

• How can our own “learning practice”, as teachers, model, stimulate and inspire our students?

• How can we “take the lid off learning” to create genuine learning communities in our schools, classrooms and communities?

• How can teachers and administrators model and become agents of change?

We invite you to join us in an exploration of learning and creativity, using the arts and self-reflection as a vehicle to evoke our work. This can create a rich field for regeneration and the discovery of wholeness in our selves and in our work as teachers. Together, we can strive to ensure that no part of any child, or any teacher, is left behind. This exploration will be co-led by Aaron Stern, founder of the Academy for the Love of Learning, and Matthew Fox, founder of the University of Creation Spirituality.

Aaron Stern, musician, composer, educator, and former Dean of the American Conservatory of Music, is an internationally recognized consultant on learning and the arts. He is founder and President of the Santa Fe-based Academy for the Love of Learning, conceived with his mentor, Leonard Bernstein. Stern’s work aims to stimulate and support an embodied integration of the arts, education and human development by creating more integral and enlivened approaches to the ways in which we educate: approaches that nurture and balance the spiritual, intellectual, aesthetic and creative lives of teachers and students.

Matthew Fox, author and teacher, is renewing the ancient feminist tradition of Creation Spirituality, which is welcoming of the arts and artists, wisdom-centered, prophetic and caring about eco-justice, social justice and gender justice issues. According to Fox’s vision, by “reinventing work, education and worship we can bring about a non-violent revolution on our planet.” To foster his creative approach to the spiritual life, Fox founded the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland, California. His most recent book is The A.W.E. Project: Reinventing Education, Reinventing the Human.
