1 year, 2 mentors, 7 schools, 9 teachers, 9 teaching artists, 200+ students, countless stories…
This year’s cohort of Teachers and Teaching Artists from across Santa Fe, and even some traveling from Albuquerque and Angel Fire, joined together at The Academy for the Love of Learning for the first time on Friday August 12th. During the gathering, facilitated by Academy Founder Aaron Stern, myself and Amy Lin, participants began exploring, learning, creating and reflecting to prepare for the first day of El Otro Lado (EOL) in the schools. The cohort will continue to meet monthly to share stories, deepen reflection, and support one another as they bring classrooms alive through arts-rich experiences. This is what one teacher had to say about the first El Otro Lado (EOL) Gathering.
“The gathering was a breath of fresh air! It was nice to learn and participate with a group of like-minded colleagues. I loved that we learned through the framework we will be using in the classroom and that we were able to explore and MAKE art!! My favorite however, was learning about the focus for El Otro Lado for the next 2-years…. the pedagogy aspect excites me beyond words! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this opportunity!!”
El Otro Lado in the Schools (EOL) is a program of the Academy for the Love of Learning that brings comprehensive, arts-rich experiences to classrooms in Santa Fe Schools. The program matches classroom teachers with teaching artists to engage in a collective creative process with young people that explores their connection to land, culture, sense of home and belonging, their own unique story, and the stories that connect us. In response to the growth and popularity of the program, El Otro Lado is available to teachers and artists through an application process, and we are honored to introduce this year’s outstanding cohort!
